16,488 Condoms at McMurdo
Jun 3rd, 2008 by Nick
So, by the end of winter, there should still be around 16,487 for the summer crew.
Update: This post, particularly, was enjoyed by international media:
The Christchurch Press “RUBBERS TO THE RESCUE: McMurdo Station has taken delivery of 16,488 condoms. The shipment last month constitutes a year’s supply, ensuring the frisky can stay safe in the sack.”
ANI “The shipment was delivered at McMurdo Station last month for those brave souls that resort to the most natural way known to mankind for keeping warm in the chilly climes of Antarctica.”
Reuters “About 125 scientists and staff are stationed at McMurdo base…” [I'm not aware of any scientists here this winter. If you know of a scientist on station, please leave a comment describing such, so the scientist can be showcased to validate the professional media.]
The Colbert Report [Stephen Colbert has this story on his show from June 23, 2008. The link is to the entire show. The segment is about 11:45 minutes into the show.]

| Suggestion | This article was posted on MSNBC, I don’t know how many people here have seen this, and I find this rather offensive. Is this really something important that needs to be put out there about the USAP? Is this our real purpose in Antarctica? Bill Henriksen, the manager of the McMurdo base station, said nearly 16,500 condoms were delivered last month and would be made available, free of charge, to staff throughout the year to avoid the potential embarrassment of having to buy them. |

| Response | The article was first published in the NZ media, after someone at McMurdo sent the information to a NZ reporter. Since then, the article has been picked up by the world press and posted on MSNBC. |
1. “The article was first published in the NZ media, after someone at McMurdo sent the information to a NZ reporter.”
The information wasn’t “sent” to anyone: it was posted on this website, after which a New Zealand reporter investigated further. Welcome to the Interweb.
2. “Is this really something important that needs to be put out there about the USAP?”
Yes.
Update:
McPenguin has a post on his blog satirizing why the big media is so interested in condoms in Antarctica.

During the summer season the condom container in the Men’s Room on Hwy 1 will be empty 90% of the time. Is someone is getting some action or are they hoarding the condoms?
thanks for that. I’m going to strongly argue against my OH overwintering next year…
The only scientists i could think of is maybe some of the ICECUBE people.
Condoms are for pussies.
