Ask an Antarctican
Apr 5th, 2008 by Nick
After a long hiatus, the Ask an Antarctican section is up again, with a few new correspondents in the wings eager to answer your questions.
I dropped the “Fucked-Up Antarctican” routine, as that schtick was worn out, though you can still read the archives.

Nick..
Have you heard any of the rumors regarding the hiring process for Summer 2008? I hear that HR is handling more of the details..
So does that mean that any of the contacts we made at the job fair are worthless?
I’d love to know your two cents.
I hear that HR is out of hand, but I don’t really understand the ins and outs. Someone tried to explain it to me, and all I could fathom was that a bunch of people who don’t really know what’s happening on the ice are starting to make more of the hiring decisions. And there is something called Raycats, Raytheon’s one-size-fits-all hiring template, that is apparently sabotaging NSF’s (“the customer”) base of experienced ice workers.
Other than that, I’ve been confused by the details. Perhaps someone from Denver can chime in here.
Do you have a feel for what the timing has been for Summer hires? I’m thinking of the registration/application/interview/offer sequence of events. On the rayjobs site, I’m listed with a status of “Interview” for a position, and it’s been that way for a few weeks.
Since we’re well into May, I’m just wondering what sort of schedule I might be looking at.
Thanks and stay warm,
