New DA Packing List
« on: July 02, 2009, 07:37:40 AM »
So I've just been PQ'd to be a DA at McMurdo for Winfly.  I have no idea what to expect, or what to bring.  I've travled a lot, but this is beyond anything I've ever done.  Any advice?

This has probably already been sent to you, but maybe you didn't see it with everything else that has been sent to you.  It is still a pretty good resource.  Of course, you will have certain things that are particular to you, but you really only will be able to figure those out once you are here (i.e. learning experience).  They are thinking of getting rid of the ability to ship things down here, but so far that hasn't happened.  Stay tuned...

Read the "Ask an Antarctican" section. Someone wrote about that last year, and a few people gave input for the list of items to bring.

pack light - you will be able to find stuff in skua.
bring hats / bandanas - whatever you prefer to wear - your head will have to be covered the whole time you're at work.
be ready to be in the limelight most days - people like to complain about the food, and they see you and will complain to you.
bring dryer sheets - you can buy them in the store, but its always good to have a little stockpile.
bring any toiletries that you prefer - b/c the store may not carry them.
sunscreen (even though you're working inside you'll still probably be outside a bit)
ipod / mp3 player - makes doing dishes and pots seem to go by faster
bring a LOT of energy and excitement - and try to stretch it out all season :)
