KIWI A Frame, burnt down tonight
« on: May 23, 2009, 05:17:32 PM »
The Kiwi A frame burnt to the ice tonight, no one was at it at the time but it was a total loss. sad times for the people who have stayed out there.

it is very very sad. sad for the kiwis, sad for those who stayed there, sad for those who never got a chance to stay there.

it put me in a somber mood last night, that's for sure. :-[

I read in the NZ press it was the last place Sir Edmund Hillary stayed on his last night in Antarctica, at his request.

Sad.  A bit of history gone.

One thing that's a bit heartening about all of this is that folks down here are looking into potential alternatives. There's some talk about possible relocation of a decommissioned building. Who knows if that's feasible or even acceptable to the various parties in charge, but at least people are trying to put forth something in response to the loss.

Can anybody tell me if it was still the same old preway heater in the hut? You know, the one I reported as being a fire hazard in 03.

It wasn't the same preway that you saw in '03 - a new heater had been installed since then.

That's nice to know. They listened for once.
