Antarctic Discussion / Newcomer - Some tips and what's new?

I recently applied for two positions on the ice, stuck my resume in the pool with Rayjobs. If Raytheon loses the contract how will hiring continue? Will interviewed employees be passed to the next contractor?
So I had a few questions too -
How are internet speeds and access there? I'm guessing in the winter it'd be faster due to less people, though.
How's the food? Any bases better than others usually?
In the summer, can non-perishable food (i.e. Amazon Grocery, some nice things) be shipped to your APO? Booze?
Not sure of the little things to ask here. Dorm living wouldn't bother me at all, and I applied for a research associate position, not sure where it is. Is there a consensus on Palmer base? I do like the company of people, but it seems neat.
