Hand washing is now mandatory at McMurdo Station.  To enforce this policy, they are making members of the community, stand guard at the front of the galley, and tell people to make sure they wash their hands, and take the names of those who do not wash their hands.  They are making people do this in their free time, with some schedules starting as early as 6:00 a.m.  This was my conversation with Don Brogan:

"I always wash my hands.  But let's say I don't...what are you going to do to me if I don't."

"I am going to try and stop you from eating in there [is that a physical threat?] and I am going to take you over to H.R. and dock your bonus."

Now if I were truly the Che Guevara that I sometimes think I am, I would have gone right ahead and made him put his money where his mouth is (or I guess it would be my money in this situation).  First of all, I would love to see the Station Manager forceably remove me from the Galley.  Second of all, I would love to see the lawsuit on that one when he docks my bonus.  Is it even legal to threaten to withhold food from employees for not washing hands?  Anyone know the legality of this decision?  This is surely an act of sheer stupidy.

Antarctic Discussion / Wasting Money
« on: May 14, 2009, 04:19:08 AM »
As we struggle to make due with budget cuts, we are told constantly that we are not able to do x, y, or z because of budget cuts.  First of all, I think Raytheon hides behind budget cuts and uses them to say no to things that they don't have to.  Also, it is increasingly frustrating to be burdened with budget cuts when there are so many examples of wasted money.  I thought that we could start listing off examples of money wasted by Raytheon.  For example, on my flight down here this season, there was a nice kid who was coming down for the first time.  When they had already flown him all the way to Christchurch, they discovered that he was not PQ'd and flew him all the way back to the states.  Anyone else have some examples of wasted money by the Incompetent Empire.

So I thought it would be interesting to make a list of things that have changed since Raytheon took over the contract.  I know that the Antarctic mindset tends to be a bit negative (myself included) so let's try to make an effort to list things that have changed for the better as well as things that have gone down the tubes.  What do you think?

Antarctic Discussion / Shelter 701
« on: March 09, 2009, 02:58:00 AM »
So, apparently, there was a bit of a fire in one of the new metal smoking shacks on station.  While there is all sorts of interesting to this story, my favorite part was that, the station manager, when he sent out an email about it, misspelled stupidity.  What a great word for him to misspell.  Here is the transcript of the email:

All Personnel
The Fire Department just imformed me that last night (Friday 3/6/09) we had a small fire in Shelter 701 next to Southern Bar.  The fire was contained in a double stacked waste can that was brought into the shelter.  The fire was started in the waste can that had paper in it and the fire was hot enough to burn a ring from the waste can into the floors' non-skid paint surface.
Everyone should understand that this kind of behavior is dangerous to our safety. This is an example of sheer stupity.  The oxygen can be depleted and cause someone to passout.  Anyone found to be complicit in this kind of behavior will be punished severely. DO NOT BRING FLAMMABLE MATERIAL OTHER THAN PROVIDED, YOURSELF AND SMOKING DEVICES INTO THE SMOKE SHELTERS   USE COVERED RECEPTACLES PROVIDED TO DISCARD YOUR CIGARETTES & CIGARS

Pictures were included, but I don't know how to attach them on here.
